Staff Sgt. Jason A. Vazquez made a lasting impact on both his country and the Chicago community. Killed in 2008 while serving in Afghanistan, he embodied commitment through his military service and his work at the Cook County Sheriff's Office. A 2002 graduate of Carl Schurz High School, Jason’s dedication to service was evident in all aspects of his life. His legacy is honored through the creation of American Legion Post 939, named in his memory, which serves as a hub for Latino veterans who felt overlooked by traditional veterans’ organizations.

American Legion Post 939 has become his namesake. Led by friends like Marcos Torres, the post provides a vital space for Latino veterans to connect, share experiences, and support one another. The post addresses issues unique to this community, such as mental health challenges and the need for greater recognition of Latino military history. Through its work, Post 939 preserves Jason’s legacy by fostering unity and ensuring future generations honor the sacrifices of veterans like him.
